Steven Gerrard can count on the support of Jürgen Klopp as he sets about the 'wonderful job' of managing Liverpool's U18s this season.

The Reds legend began pre-season training with his new squad last week, having put together his backroom team and co-ordinated plans for the youngsters now under his tutelage.

Taking charge of the U18s side is the latest step in Gerrard’s coaching career after the former midfielder returned to the club in a wide-ranging role at the Kirkby base earlier this year.

As well as the help and guidance of Academy director Alex Inglethorpe and the rest of the staff around him, Gerrard will have the ear of Klopp when required.

“I can imagine how excited he is,” the manager told Liverpoolfc.com.

“It’s a wonderful job to work with these skilled boys and to do the things you think are right for them, bring in new experience and learn a lot of things at the same time.

“It will be a fantastic time for him. Of course we’ll have a close relationship with him and the U23s, we always had it. It’s very important for us because that’s our next generation and we want to help them as much as we can. Of course we’ll be in close contact.”
