Of Liverpool's current squad, Philippe Coutinho would have been best equipped to star in Phil Thompson's era at Anfield according to the former Reds captain.

The Brazilian scored more than any other player in 2016-17, reaching a personal best of 14 in a single season for the club courtesy of a prolific final few weeks.

That run included a precise free-kick on the last day of the campaign against Middlesbrough and a pair of unerring finishes at West Ham United the previous week, as Jürgen Klopp’s side secured a top-four spot.

Thompson was asked as part of a fan Q&A on LFC Xtra which star in the modern team would have suited the sides he featured in – and quickly opted for the playmaker.

“When you’re blessed with the ability that he has – you saw the likes of Dalglish drop off to make the No.10 role his own – Philippe Coutinho is one of those players that can thrill you,” said the ex-defender.

“He can get you out of your seat and he can score those goals you’ll remember. Philippe does it for fun. He whips them in with his right foot, whether it’s the near post or using the far post.

“He would have to be the one I think could have excited in our day.”
