The 231st Merseyside derby passed by without a goal but there was no shortage of talking points from a Liverpool perspective.

With a host of injuries afflicting the squad, Jürgen Klopp made five changes to his line-up – including maiden starts this season for Nathaniel Clyne and Danny Ings.

Ragnar Klavan and Georginio Wijnaldum were deployed in different roles than usual, meanwhile, as the Reds claimed a Premier League point in the middle of their Champions League clash with Manchester City.

Loris Karius keeps up excellent form

The stalemate at Goodison Park means the Liverpool goalkeeper has now recorded eight clean sheets in his last 15 appearances in all competitions.

Karius’ most significant contribution to the shutout was his exceptional reach to tip a Yannick Bolasie curler from outside the area around the post during the first half.

“World-class,” said Klopp.

The German was indebted to Everton’s profligacy late on, as Seamus Coleman was unable to connect with Cenk Tosun’s tee-up before Dominic Calvert-Lewin shot over from a good position, but the stats make for satisfying reading at present.

A fine day’s work for Gini

Another man to chalk up eye-catching numbers on the other side of Stanley Park was Wijnaldum.

Stationed as the deepest of the Reds’ midfield three – perhaps with an eye on Tuesday’s return meeting with Manchester City, when Jordan Henderson is suspended – the Dutchman was efficient and effective.

No other player on the pitch bettered his 91 touches and 81 passes (93.8 per cent of which were accurate).

Clyne’s comeback goes smoothly

The right-back’s remarkable wait for a return to first-team action came to an end with a composed display that showed no hint the 27-year-old has not played since last July.

“You see the natural quality he has is unbelievable – nine months with no football and then that. It was really strong,” the manager commented after Clyne completed the full 90 minutes.

Goodison a good luck charm for Ings

After two-and-a-half years – 916 days, specifically – Ings was named in the Liverpool starting XI again, at the same stadium where that had last happened.

The English striker was on the scoresheet at Goodison Park in October 2015, heading home in a 1-1 draw, but was unable to repeat the trick this time around.

Klopp was sufficiently impressed by the effort of the No.28, however.

“It is not his position but he tried everything. He and Dom [Solanke] didn’t play together very often. It was not easy to make the right runs in the right moment but the attitude and fitness was perfect,” said the boss.

Reds and Klopp extend Everton records

While Liverpool fell short of three points on the afternoon, they did nevertheless extend their unbeaten run against their neighbours to 17 matches.

And the Reds’ seven-game streak without a league defeat at Goodison Park equalled the club record set between 1913 and 1922.

Klopp himself has now been involved in six Merseyside derbies, winning four and drawing two.
